Semester in Practice

Vermont Law School is committed to offering an integrated curriculum, one that values high quality, traditional academic instruction while expanding student's options through a number of experiential learning situations, including an on-campus clinic, a legislative clinic, a part-time internship program, and the full-time external clinics: the Semester in Practice and the Environmental Semester in Washington.

The Semester in Practice/Environment Semester in Washington is a full-time, limited-enrollment, individually tailored external clinic, appropriate for students interested in self-directed learning under the supervision of an experienced field-mentor. Field-mentors are experienced lawyers who work with and within: government (state, federal and local), NGO's, non profit organizations, and law firms.

We intend, through this clinic:

  1. To give students interested in an area of substantive law not offered at VLS an opportunity to learn that area through work with practitioners specializing or practicing in it.
  2. To permit students through practical experience to develop an area of substantive law expertise beyond the level available through courses.
  3. To give students an opportunity through experiential application to gain familiarity with or mastery of some lawyering skills beyond the level available at VLS.
  4. To give students intensive research, writing, and analytic problem solving opportunities in the context of whole cases.
  5. To give students sufficient legal experience to improve their understanding and retention of materials and skills taught in the classroom.
